The best of the AA Torque Show series two

It seems like only yesterday that Danny, Roger and Aaron first lit up our screens with their witty and insightful car reviews and news in the second series of the AA Torque Show.

But yes, folks, it's been 10 weeks and now the fun must come to an end. But only on your TV: keep checking the site for more new car diaries from AA Torque magazine editor Jacqui Madelin.

In the meantime, we're taking a look back at some of the highlights of series two.

"First programme of the series and I get to compare two cars. What are they? Hatchbacks. The most boring car in the world," was Danny's gripe in episode one.

Aaron got to live any petrolhead's dream, testing two brand new V8s at Taupo Motorsport Park in episode two.

AA Torque Show episode oneWhile Danny zipped around town in the Holden Astra SRi and the Mazda3 MPS (and discovered that they really weren't that bad) Aaron and Roger got their hands on the new Porsche 911 GT3. Unfortunately for Aaron, the GT3 was to prove his favourite car in the series.

But he didn't spend nine more episodes moping; instead he got to live any petrolhead's dream, testing two brand new V8s, the Holden HSV R8 and the Chrysler 300C SRT8 at Taupo Motorsport Park in episode two.

While Danny reckoned the SRT8 was a pimpmobile and definitely a car for people who like being looked at, committed Ford man Roger found himself strangely attracted to the HSV.

But it's not just Fords and a steep flight of stairs that get Roger's pulse racing, it's also Italians. Roger's purist approach to all things Italian and vehicular was tested in episode three by the new Alfa 159.

While non-purists won't mind an auto Alfa, the Rogers out there probably aren't so impressed...

While non-purists won't mind an auto Alfa, the Rogers out there probably aren't so impressed... nor by the fact that it's now available in diesel.

Out of the 45 SUVs on the market, the team chose two to test in episode four: Holden's Captiva (taking the Ford Territory head-on) and the Mazda CX7. The Captiva is built for the farm, while the CX7 traces its lineage to the track. And Aaron managed to lift the wheels of both.

Things got a bit green in episode five, when Danny headed to the lab to find out about biofuels. But the real action happened when the guys got behind the wheels of three builders' utes: the Mitsubishi Triton, the Ford Ranger and Ssangyong's Actyon to find out which has the blokiest credentials.

Danny and Aaron tested the ultimate in hairdresser cars: convertibles.

AA Torque Show episode sixIn episode six the Volvo S80 was revealed as the supreme winner in the AA Motoring Excellence Awards. With safety features galore, Roger suggested it's car for those who aren't entirely confident in their driving skills. And it was part one of the Motormouth Celebrity Challenge - some of New Zealand's fastest talkers got behind the wheel of a Formula Challenge race car.

The dynamic shortcomings of the stylish, yet fundamentally unsafe, Audi TT have been addressed the new, safer model, featured in episode seven.

Danny and Aaron tested the ultimate in hairdresser cars: convertibles. Danny was in heaven in the Volvo C70 and Aaron 'kind of got the picture' in the BMW 335i as the light faded and the heater kept him cosy even with the top down.

And it was the final of the Motormouth Celebrity Challenge. Clarke Gayford was the clear winner and our own Danny scraped into the top eight, not too far behind the other seven drivers.

In episode eight Roger discovered his bottom in the Lotus Exige S.

AA Torque Show episode eightIn episode eight Roger discovered his bottom in the Lotus Exige S, which faithfully tracks the road surface. Then he was off on a coffee-finding mission, racing his Mitsubishi iCar against Danny's Vesper and Aaron's pushbike. Despite his lack of motor, ever-competitive Aaron still managed to win.

While Aaron reckoned the Bentley Continental Flying Spur in episode nine is more of a driver's car, Danny enjoyed the luxury of being driven in $400k worth of car. After all, an arm rest with coffee holders and a place to store his diamonds is all Danny really needs in a car...

In the final episode of the AA Torque Show, Roger spied his dream car and was surprised to learn that it's German. The Mercedes CLK DTM AMG is one of only 100 ever made and could just as easily sit in an art gallery as your driveway. If you have half a million to spare, that is.

And after waiting nine episodes, Danny was finally allowed to ride a motorbike. He chose the Harley Davidson Superglide. OK, so it's a beginner's bike, but it was Danny's first time on a Harley and he was pretty stoked. Even when Aaron decided to race him - and won. Again.
